Ranks & Progression
2048.now uses a military rank system built on 10 trophy categories - Meaning every part of the game contributes to your overall progression. This guide explains how ranks work, what each trophy category rewards, and how to progress efficiently. See your current standing on the leaderboard.
1 How does the rank system work?
Ranks are military-themed titles awarded based on your total trophy count. The more trophies you accumulate across all 10 trophy categories, the higher your rank. Ranks progress through 13 tiers - From Private at the entry level up through Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Colonel, and ultimately General at the top. Every tier has multiple sub-levels before promoting to the next.
2 What are all the rank tiers?
The 13 military rank tiers in order from lowest to highest:
- Private → Corporal → Sergeant
- Staff Sergeant → Warrant Officer
- Lieutenant → Captain
- Major → Lieutenant Colonel → Colonel
- Brigadier → Major General → General
Each tier requires progressively more trophies and represents measurable mastery across the game's full range of competitive activities.
3 What are trophies and how are they earned?
Trophies are permanent milestone markers earned by crossing score or performance thresholds in each of the 10 trophy categories. Each category has multiple milestone tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and beyond for top categories). Once earned, a trophy is never taken away. Your total trophy count determines your rank, so every milestone in every category contributes.
4 What are the 10 trophy categories?
The 10 categories that feed into your rank:
- Classic Score - Best single game on the 4×4 grid
- Expert Score - Best single game on the 6×6 grid
- Speed - Fastest time to reach the 2048 tile
- Arena - Performance in ticketed Arena mode
- Total XP - Cumulative XP earned across all play
- Win Streak - Longest consecutive win run
- Quest Completion - Daily and weekly quest progress
- Multiplayer Wins - Wins in head-to-head mode
- Seasonal Rank - Monthly leaderboard finish position
- Games Played - Total ranked games completed
Details on each category are in the Trophies Guide.
5 Can my rank ever decrease?
No - Your military rank is permanent and only increases. Once you reach Captain, you will always be at least Captain. Ranks never decrease, even if you stop playing for months. This makes progression feel genuinely earned and removes the anxiety of rank decay that exists in many competitive games. Only the seasonal leaderboard position resets monthly - Your rank, all-time trophies, and XP are untouched.
6 How do I earn XP efficiently?
XP is awarded for every ranked game completed, with multipliers for:
- Completing daily quests (often 1.5–2× XP bonus)
- Winning multiplayer games (bonus XP on top of base)
- High scores on Expert 6×6 (harder grids give more XP)
- Arena wins (highest XP per game)
The fastest XP path: complete daily quests every day, mix Classic and Expert play, and enter Arena when you have tickets.
7 What are daily quests?
Daily quests are a set of challenges that refresh every 24 hours - Examples include "Score above 20,000 in a Classic game", "Win 2 multiplayer matches", or "Complete a game without using any undos." Completing quests earns XP, coins, and occasional gems. They're the single most efficient daily activity for progression, especially for players who can only play 20–30 minutes per day.
8 What are coins used for?
Coins are the primary Shop currency - Earned through ranked games, daily quests, and login streak rewards. They're spent in the Shop on board skins, tile style themes, cursor cosmetics, and profile frames. Coins are earned through normal gameplay at a comfortable rate. They cannot be used for Arena tickets or Premium - Those use gems and real currency respectively.
9 What are gems used for?
Gems are the premium currency - Rarer than coins. Gems can be spent on Arena entry tickets, exclusive Shop items, and certain cosmetics not available for coins. They're earned through: daily login streak milestones (every N-day streak gives gems), quest achievement rewards, event placements, and rank tier promotions. Premium subscribers receive a bonus daily gem allowance.
10 How long does it take to reach each rank?
Approximate timelines for active players who play daily and complete quests:
- Corporal–Sergeant: 1–2 weeks
- Staff Sergeant–Lieutenant: 3–6 weeks
- Captain–Major: 2–4 months
- Colonel and above: 4–12+ months depending on Arena activity and top-tier scores
- General: Requires months of elite performance across all 10 categories
Players who focus on multiple trophy categories simultaneously progress significantly faster than those who only play Classic mode.
11 What is the Win Streak trophy and why does it matter?
The Win Streak trophy tracks your longest consecutive run of ranked wins without a single loss. Longer streaks earn higher trophy milestones in the Win Streak category, which directly contributes to your overall rank. Protecting a long streak becomes a meaningful strategic decision: should you attempt a risky Expert game that might end your 20-game streak? This tension makes the Win Streak category one of the most exciting to pursue.
12 What is the difference between seasonal rank and all-time rank?
Your all-time rank is your military title (Private → General) based on cumulative trophy count - It never resets. Your seasonal position is your placement on the monthly leaderboard based on that month's scores - It resets at month end and determines seasonal prizes. They measure different things: all-time rank measures total career achievement, seasonal position measures recent peak performance.
13 Do quest and achievement completions stack permanently?
Yes - All quest and achievement completions are permanent records. The Quest Completion trophy category tracks cumulative quest completions over your entire account lifetime. Even if you take a break and return months later, every quest you completed previously still counts toward your Quest Completion trophy total and your overall rank.
