Equipment & Cosmetics
Equipment is the personalisation layer of 2048.now - Four cosmetic slots that let you customise every visual element of your game. None of it affects competitive rankings, but rare items signal your dedication to other players on the leaderboard. Browse what's available in the Shop.
1 What is the equipment system in 2048.now?
Equipment is a cosmetic personalisation system with four distinct slots that each change a different visual element of your game. All items are purely visual - Equipment has zero effect on tile values, score calculation, undo availability, or any ranked metric. It's entirely about how your game looks and how you express your identity to other players on the leaderboard.
2 What are the four equipment slots?
The four slots:
- Board - The skin theme applied to the game board background and grid lines
- Tile Style - The visual design of the number tiles themselves (fonts, colours, shapes, animations)
- Cursor - The visual indicator showing your move direction
- Timer - The display style of the in-game timer
You can mix and match items from any quality tier across the four slots independently. Full details in the Equipment Guide.
3 What are the five quality tiers?
Quality tiers in order from lowest to highest:
- Common (grey) - Basic designs, widely available from quests and play
- Uncommon (green) - Slightly enhanced designs, earned through consistent play
- Rare (blue) - Detailed designs, earned through rank milestones and extended quest chains
- Epic (purple) - Premium designs with visual effects, primarily from Arena and events
- Legendary (gold) - Animated premium designs, only from seasonal championships and ultra-rare drops
Higher tiers are rarer and visually more elaborate, not mechanically superior.
4 How do I get equipment?
Equipment is obtained through multiple paths:
- Daily quests - Common and Uncommon items drop regularly from quest completions
- Rank milestones - Each rank tier promotion awards equipment of increasing rarity
- Arena wins - Epic items are exclusive drops from Arena performance
- Seasonal events - Limited-time exclusive designs available only during event windows
- Shop - A rotating selection purchasable with coins (see Shop)
- Marketplace - Trade or purchase from other players at Marketplace
5 Can equipment affect my game score or rank?
No - Equipment is 100% cosmetic. Tile Style changes how number tiles look, not how they behave. Board skins change the background theme. No equipment item modifies score multipliers, undo counts, spawn rates, or any competitive metric. The playing field is always equal regardless of what equipment you have equipped. This is by design to ensure every rank and score is purely skill-based.
6 What is the difference between a Board skin and a Tile Style?
A Board skin changes the background of the game grid - The colour, texture, and border design of the playing surface. A Tile Style changes the numbered tiles themselves - Their colours, fonts, shapes, and any animated effects. You equip one of each independently. Some players prefer a neutral Board with an expressive Tile Style; others go for a matching themed set.
7 What does Legendary equipment look like?
Legendary items are the rarest tier and feature premium animated effects - Particle animations, glow effects, dynamic colour shifts - That aren't present in lower tiers. A Legendary Tile Style might have tiles that pulse with light on merge. A Legendary Board skin might have an animated background that responds to gameplay. Legendary items are a visible signal of elite dedication to other players watching your live game or viewing your leaderboard profile.
8 Is there a dark mode for 2048.now?
Yes - 2048.now has a full dark theme applied to the entire interface including the game board, menus, leaderboards, and all UI elements. Toggle it in Account Settings. Board skins and Tile Styles are designed to look good in both light and dark themes, so your cosmetics always display as intended regardless of your preferred theme.
9 Can I trade equipment with other players?
Equipment trading is available through the Marketplace. You can list duplicate items for other players to acquire. Premium subscribers have enhanced trading access. Trading is a useful way to convert duplicate Common items into the rare items you actually want, especially after prolific quest completion periods.
10 Do seasonal equipment items come back after the season ends?
Seasonal items are designed to be limited - They generally don't return in identical form. Some designs reappear in anniversary events with minor variations, but as a rule, items exclusive to a specific season are only available during that season's active period. This makes seasonal items collectible and gives long-term players a visual record of their participation history.
11 How do I equip items I've earned?
Navigate to your Equipment loadout from the profile menu. Select a slot (Board, Tile, Cursor, or Timer), browse your collection filtered by type and quality, and click an item to preview and equip it. Changes take effect immediately for all future games. Your equipped loadout is visible to other players viewing your profile or watching your live game.
12 What's the rarest equipment in 2048.now?
Championship and seasonal finale exclusive Legendary items are the rarest - Available only to top finishers in major competitive events. These are impossible to obtain outside their original award window and cannot be purchased in the Shop or traded in the Marketplace (they're bound to the recipient). A player displaying one of these items on the leaderboard is a signal of historical top-level competition.
