2048 Grid Sizes: 4×4 vs 5×5 vs 6×6
2048.now offers three grid sizes, each with its own global leaderboard, seasonal ranking, and strategic demands:
Classic 4×4 (16 cells)
The original format. Fastest games (3–10 minutes). The most-played size and the best starting point for new players. The corner-snake strategy translates directly from the classic rules.
Large 5×5 (25 cells)
More room means higher achievable tiles and longer games (8–20 minutes). The extra 9 cells provide more recovery options when a bad tile appears, making very high tiles more accessible than on 4×4. Strategy is the same but requires managing a wider chain.
Expert 6×6 (36 cells)
The prestige competitive format. Games can run 15–40 minutes. Top-ranked players score above 1,000,000 points on 6×6, which is far beyond what's achievable on 4×4. The larger board makes extreme tile chains (32768+) realistic for skilled players. This is the preferred format among top-leaderboard competitors.
Which to choose?
Start on 4×4, move to 6×6 once you consistently reach 8192. The core corner strategy is the same - the difference is game length, maximum achievable score, and board complexity.
